In a move that is sure to outrage conservatives because of the combination of gayness and immigration, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement included a provision in it’s revised Performance Based Detention Standards that requires officers to allow prisoners to continue hormone therapy if they were receiving the treatment before being taken into custody.
The new guidelines advise officers to ask a variety of questions for screening when a person is taken into custody, including asking “about a detainee’s gender identification and history of transition related care”. If the detainee was already receiving transition related care, they are to continue receiving that treatment in the detention facility.
These standards are actually the 2011 revision, so they may have been released several months ago (I can’t find a timestamp on the document or website). The story is currently appearing on Fox News and the Daily Caller because Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) has suddenly decided to make an issue of it. Not because he actually thinks that anything will be changed, but just because, ya know, he’s a dick.
